It all started when my sister did a beekeeping course and wouldn’t stop talking about it so I decided to surprise her by building her a beehive ,using some hive dimensions I had found online. Unfortunately our first attempt was a bit of a disaster, we didn’t really know what we were doing but we managed to catch a swarm that clearly weren’t impressed with their new home and swarmed shortly after!

However that setback only fuelled my determination, so I bought two hives of native Irish honeybees from a local beekeeper and very quickly fell in love with beekeeping .What started as a hobby with just two hives, quickly blossomed and the jars we shared with family and friends were a big hit so we took a leap and decided to sell some at a local shop. To our surprise they flew off the shelves!

That’s how Dungarvan honey was born. The profits from our initial sales went right back into setting up a honey house at home and now we’re officially in business and our entire family are involved. We have big dreams of increasing the number of hives year on year and watching our business grow while preserving our native Irish honey bee.
